Hello,
I've read older posts on USPHS and am working to learn more about commissioned officer opportunities. I am having a hard time understanding what the commitment level looks like, and have a couple of questions:
Is deployment mandatory, and how often does it happen? Is there a contractual commitment of a certain number of years; essentially, can officers resign in between?

Unless you are in the service already, you can't join the USPHS as a nurse currently. Their website has more information about which disciplines are open.
Also, you don't deploy like the regular military to war/hot areas. The deployments are CONUS only which are usually humanitarian. The contracts were pretty much like the regular military when I was looking at joining, you can do a base of 3, and then 4 up to 6 depending on bonus you take/loan repayment.
If the contracts are like regular military, you don't resign. You simply keep going, unless you want to get out or are forced out.
