I am curious (not about COSTEPs though) . What are you doing in the USPHS? How do you like it?

I am really curious too. Their website is good, but I am considering the military. Why did you pick the USPHS instead of military? Or did you ever consider the military?

I was wondering if you ever interact with the any military officers in the health field and if they respect your office? Are there opportunities to move with your family while you serve in the USPHS? Do you receive better continuing ed in this corp than in the civilian corp? Tell me anything else you can think of that you were impressed by about the USPHS. Also, what was the officer school like?

Hello, I am extremely interested in joining the USPHS and have been trying to get in touch with someone for weeks now, but I cannot seem to get anyone live. I have also e-mailed and no luck. Would you or your wife have any contact information for any recruiter? I wanted to start the process as soon as possible, I wanted to be able to get an offer from them if possible as soon as possible. Thanks.

I was a SRCOSTEP as well. I chose the USPHS because I wanted to do humanitarian work in the US. It is also very diverse in the divisions you can work in such as Indian Health Service, Food and Drug Administration, National Institute of Health..etc.

Who are you trying to contact to get in? Many people in the D.C. area were deployed for the Hurricanes and are probably backed up. There is only 2 official recruiters I believe. Our human resources department is small so you have to have patience if you want to get in.

If you agree to go to a very rural area and do an isolated hardship or hazardous duty location you can get longer months for your SRCOSTEP. I was able to get a 16 month COSTEP. I am currently serving a rural area for 32 months for payback. If you are a COSTEP you do not promote as fast people who come in with experience. I was an ensign and now a LTJG O-2. I will be an O-2 for another year.

Please do not let the "fast promotion" fool you. You have to meet benchmarks and do certain things to get promoted including community service. I have known several people who were passed up for promotion just related to forms not being filled out correctly. For the standards they used to have, they are getting tougher on us.

I really want to do L/D, maternity. I would really like to talk to someone about the whole COSTEP/SRCOSTEP thing, seeing as I would like to apply to the correct program for me, because I am also looking for tuition support. I would like to keep it as a career as well, because the benfits seem awesome.

What type of duty station and location is considered hazard duty? What sort of benchmarks are required for promotion to O-4 and up?

Bureau of Prisons and Immigration are both considered hazardous duty.
