There is a farm right here in my neighborhood that used to specialize in scallions. They were run out of the business by cheap imports.

May I ask what in the world you are talking about?

maybe the huge Hepatitis A outbreak that recently happened in PA because of tainted scallions (imported from Mexico) from a Chi-Chi's restaurant.
But that's just a guess.

yep that is it. Well we are reaping what we sow, trying to "save a buck" here aren't we? Moral?WASH that produce well, cause I doubt it will change until we are ready to quit bottom-lining everything in this country, in the way of goods and services.

I remember the cyanide in Chilean grapes. They were using a pesticide that converted to cyanide. A lot of countries don't have the strict agricultural controls we do.
We were in a critical care course today talking about this subject. Seems that many farmers in many countries just use the products in their outhouses to fertilize their fields. No composting, no sterilizing.

My cousins in law pick peas (and other things, seasonally) in West Texas. Generally, the only 'facilities' available are Port-a-Potties, picnic tables, and a water spigot. A hand-washing station would go a long way toward better health for all of us.

Can't believe we (continental States) can't compete with the imports on this.
