Unreasonable request

I had a 2 year old come in today severely constipated, I asked the nurse to please show the. Mom how to give a enema since mom was uncomfortable doing it. The response I received was I'm not doing that you do it. Since it was just me and her and a screaming kid and mom, I showed the mom, and now wondering why have a nurse.the nurse stated I have done it on old people not babies ( it was a 2 year old ) I offered to have her come in with me and she still refused . Done venting

Giving enemas is nursing 101. I started out as a lvn and this was one of the first things we learned. My point is as a provider as a NP if I request something being told No you do it not acceptable . What is acceptable is geez Im not comfortable doing this on a 2 year old would you be willing to walk me through this, I love to teach but she refused any guidance or assistance. I understand some people are not comfortable doing certain tasks but in health care get over it.

I agree. She could have at least tried to learn. And I love the kids too. I will be an FNP in a few weeks (praise God) and I really cant wait to work with kids. I love um so much, and I just want to help them. I didn't get any newborn kids during my clinicals so I am a lil nervous about that. I hope I am fine with them because I will not take a job that does not see kids when I graduate. Must have kids! lol

Where did you go to school where I went in our peds rotation had to include newborns, I was lucky enough to get to make newborn rounds with the md

Wow, that is so nice! I go to U of Detroit Mercy. Gotta find your own clinicals. My youngest baby was 10 months old. I have had some newborns myself though, lol. Does that count? Saw my kids pediatrician do an excellent head to toe on my newborn, I was blown away. Checked for a red reflex and everything with the light off, lol.

First off, cudos to you for handling it very well, both the OM and the nurse.I don't mind ignorance, but I hate stupid AND lazy.
