Can someone tell me exactly what a Unit Secretary does and about how much they start out making in the FW area?
Thanks!

I cannot give you any input on pay...but on my unit the secretaries..answer phones, get charts ready, thin charts, enter orders, run small errands...blood bank. Help with families..man we really love our secretaries they make the unit run...I am sure they do alot more, this is just what popped into my head.

Yes, I attribute much of my success in nursing school to making nice with the unit secretary- they know absolutely everything about how things get done.

I just finished my first week..you do everything and if you plan on going on to nursing school, I can't think of a better place to start. You will learn soooo much! My head is still spinning from all I learned (no prior medical background, i have been a paralegal for 18 years), however I cant wait to go back to work Monday, go for it!

You are the jack of all trades for the unit. I used to do EKGs, phlebotomy, order transcription, receptionist, errand girl/boy and be back up for the CNA all for $9.79hr. You will learn a great deal, and it is perfect for learning healthcare.

I'm a Unit Secretary in the CCU at my hospital. I'm trying to get into the Nursing Program at the Community College close by me. I just started the job and I've learned so much from the Nurses and other Secretaries. It's a really cool job getting a "behind the scene" look at what goes on at a hospital. My experience has done nothing but make me want to be a Nurse even more.
P.S.
Don't tick off Unit Secretaries they can be....well believe me I'm still in training.
So how does one who has NO medical experience get into a Unit Secretary position? I've applied to several hospitals but I cant even get my foot in the door for an interview.
I got lucky and emailed my resume to the dept director directly who told me to fill an app, interviewed and was hired right there. They were desperate and had no one for the night shift, so I got it. Helped that I told her I was almost done with my pre reqs, applying to RN school next fall and that I had YEARS of law office management etc. Just be persistent, especially with hospitals email follow up regularly.
My positon is PRN and my super. told me that not alot of people apply for a unit secretary's position PRN. I had also put my appl. in earlier to be a CCP(Clinical Care Provider), and I didn't get that because you have to be a 1st year RN student, and I wasn't. So, when the position came up she remembered me.
I got my first hospital job as a unit secretary by finding out who the recruiter was for that position from HR and called/e-mailed her my resume. I was very sincere in my attempt and told her that I was planning on going to nursing school and wanted to gain some health care experience. She called me 2 days later and asked me to come in for an interview. I did and was offered the job the same day.
:twocents:I just want to warn you though. I work in a hospital and when outside people call us asking our directors name/e-mail address/phone # etc. for employment purposes we usually don't give it out. That's confidential information and many directors do not like their employees to give out that information. I would reccommend you go the first route; I have gave many people the same info and 4 out of 6 got hired that way. HTH
