UMB Spring 2009

Soooo...

After we all received our packages we had a few things to fill out especially the medical history form. Notice that it said to return it within 4 weeks of dated item and the other thing is that it needs to be signed off by your doctor, the major thing on there is that you need to have 2 tb test within the past year and within 2 weeks apart. Scheduling and doing a TB test takes time...I just got my last tb test read this past Monday, so now I am waiting for the doc to sign off on the paper. But the point is, is that I'm past the 4 week period.

Anyone else in the same boat?

Bikerdude,

Are you a new student or a grad student? If you work at a hospital, employee health should be able to help with the paperwork and the tb tests. I had one of the md's I work with sign off my paperwork. Hope this helps...

Hey bikerdude,

I was able to get all my stuff done as soon as I got the packet. But I wanna say that you have until the start of the semester to get those all in. Especially since those are for clinicals, and clinicals don't start until near the end of the semester, I doubt there should be a problem.

BUT, please don't take my word for it, call the office, they were always really good about answering my questions when I called. The number is 410-328-6791, and press the option for the front desk assistant/receptionist, she's been helpful in the past for me. BTW, don't just leave a message, keep calling back until you get a hold of her, because she is bad about returning calls!

yeah I have it all done now I just need to send it away! I just got the drs signature the other day.

Ok, cool! If you are going to the SG campus, I will be seeing you there!

Hey everyone!

Im busy filling out my application for Fall '09 and i had a question about the resume. What did you all put for objective? And did you list things that you had done a couple years ago or no?

I geared it towards academics. Im also applying for the fall so...

I had a question about the personal statement actually. It seems pretty open ended as it just asks for an essay about goals and objectives. I was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts in general or any tips. Thanks.

I think it helps if you have long term goals and objectives that you can articulate.

Think on that and see what you can come up with. Where do you want to see yourself in 5,10,20 years. What are you passionate about? Are you service oriented? Research oriented? Maybe you don't have long term goals yet, or you haven't had enough life experiance and they seem fuzzy; disucss the short term. Do you want to graduate Magna Cum Laude? Do you want to invest yourself in student life gov't/community?

Be true. Don't talk about making "tons of money" even if a nurses salary seems like tons of money. Maybe "because I care about people" is too vague unless you can discuss why/how/when/what circumstances...

Just my thoughts.

Thanks. Really helpful tips. I guess the fact that they kind of left it very open ended without a page limit, makes the task a bit daunting for me. But your suggestions really help. Thanks again.

Thanks!!

so nervous about the application, unfortunantly, i havent been able to take any of the labs until this coming semester( scheduling conflicts) so im extremely worried. Hopefully my net score, recs and statement will help.

Make it personal in every way. Don't let it be vague and boring, make it stand out from all the others. Amanda Barnes said at the Information Orientation to make sure you stand out from the pack, it could make a difference, especially if you have a lower GPA than the rest of the applicant. A big plus to add is also make sure you share a personal experiance that has validated why you want to become a nurse, not just "every since I was little I wanted to be a nurse...." (she said if she had a dime for everytime she read that she could retire by now!)

Good luck to all you guys applying for upcoming semesters!

Thanks for the answer. Also, at the information session, did they say anything about the length of the personal essay or any other pointers for it? Thanks!
