Try the Same Program or New One?

I am going back and forth about this!

Background: I was recently in a BSN part time program. The program was great because it allowed me to work full time teaching while going to nursing school. However, I ended up getting a D in Med-Surg. They allowed me to retake the class but during that time I had a baby and I missed about 6 weeks of class and clinicals. At first, the school advised me to withdraw from the class and I was fine with that. But when I sat down with administration, I was told that I would have to reapply to the whole program!

I really want to go back and finish the nursing program. However, I wonder if I am wasting time by going back there or should I try another program possibly an ASN program ? Since I used majority of my federal financial aid the first time, I am sure I would have to get private loans if I went back to the private program. Also, since I have kids and bills, I would still need to work full time.

What would you do?

I would choose the associates in nursing program. It would definitely be cheaper than what you are paying now.

Break out a calculator and compare what starting anew in an ADN program would cost you versus finishing the BSN program. The credits are cheaper in the ADN I would imagine, however, many nursing schools do not take any nursing credits from others schools (mine didn't, though things like Micro might transfer). So, see if you would be starting anew, you might have to and it could theoretically cost you more, depending on how far you were into the program. Also, ADN programs are VERY intense. Many have no part time option. I worked while in school for ADN, but don't recommend it if you can help it. (Can't speak to BSN programs, but I do have my BA in another field. That required much more work, but it was over 4 years, not 2+.. that makes a HUGE difference)

I would not return to that program. If the school administration had been on your side, they would have arranged a leave of absence and allowed you to return to start where you left off. They told you to reapply so that you are further off balance, if they admit you again at all.

That's how I have been feeling. I wasn't the only one who had a baby in the program. Actually, a student had two babies and they worked with her on clinicals and class. It feels like they were trying to weed me out.

I probably will not be applying to school until next year due to the fact that I have to take some prerequisites over. I just wanted to see if it made sense to try for the BSN with so much financial aid debt.
