when you are a traveling nurse do you need a license for every state you go to? how does it work if you go to a diffrent state every three months? i have a friend that wants to do this, but we are not sure how it works. thanks

Yes, you have to be licensed in every state you work. My home state is part of the Nursing Compact, so that makes it a bit easier. I did go to a state outside of the Compact, and had no trouble getting the license in time to start my contract (most assignments are finalized a month or more ahead of time).

Not all states are quick on issuing licenses. An easy way to find out processing time is to contact that particular state board of nursing. 5 years ago it took 2 months to get just a temp license in Florida!!!!! It is smart to plan early!

I'm just starting out. I found out that your home license has to be a compact state, otherwise you have ot apply for every state you go to. I started with an MN license, and then got an Iowa one. I thought I was ok having the Iowa license, but when I wanted to go to Colorado they told me I had to apply again.
