what do most of you do for transportation when on an assignment far from home? I was thinking of renting a car, hoped to get a deal because of the lenght of time I would need it.

I drive to all my asignments, but that is partly because I enjoy the roadtrips and because I want to have my "stuff" with me. I do know of some nurses who have rented cars, but it's a pretty big expense. Others who take contracts in large cities have managed with public transport.

look into hotwire.com....me and gf just took trip to savanna for 5 days and car rental was 12 dollars a day. I plan on using them for car transportation as i start traveling shortly

You can also negotiate a rental car in your contract.

I have to make it part of my contract. Most rental agencies will want you to pay for a month right off the bat. If I had that kind of money I'd buy a newer car and drive across the country.

There are two very important things to have when traveling...
1.) reliable wheels
2.) plenty of money stashed away to be prepared for 'worst case scenarios'.
The 2nd is imperative these days. I always drive to my assignments, even if cross-country...i like the sense of security and the opportunity for spur of the moment road trips. NYC would be the only exception.
If you don't want to take your vehicle, try it without. It wouldn't kill you, and maybe you'd find it liberating. If you find you'd rather have it, take it with you the next assignment. I always think, "it's only 3 months, I could stand on my head for that amount of time"!
