Transition to the ED

I have been a nurse for a year and 10 months with my first 9 months in Cardiac stepdown and my last year in the PCU or Icu stepdown. I have been offered a lateral move in our hospitals Ed. I was told that I will have 6-8 week of orientation(which I dont feel is enough due to the fact that I have no critical care experience). we have a pretty big ed that sees aboud 250 people per day.

Do you think that the orientation is suffient being that I am not brand spanking new?

What other questions should I ask with regards to my orientation? Should I push for more time?

Help :uhoh3:

I think that as long as you are working with some senior people and they agree to mentor you on that you will be fine. If they don't your life will be hell.

Up north I worked in the ED without any experience. BUT, thing was we always had a doctor and any ambulance coming in would call us first so we were prepared. There was an experienced nurse either with me or readily available.

Good luck.

Go through your orientation. If you feel that it is not enough , you can push for more time. Once you are on your own , it can be hell if you are still unsure. Try to find a good mentor. They are priceless!! Speaking of experience...
