Ummmm it's been a while since i've had to do this sort of thing but i'm pretty sure you prime the line with normal saline first.

Have always primed with normal saline

You can only prime a line with Normal Saline. You can also only flush a line in between bags with normal saline. Hope this helps and good luck with your exam.

You would want to choose option A.

It is the only "acceptable" answer.

Why?

Well, A 3% Sodium Chloride solution should only be used for pt's with severe Hyponatremia that present with neurological syptoms. It is also a vesicant.

D5W or option C is dextrose or sugar in water. Because this is a hypotonic solution in the body ( the dextrose is quickly metabolized and your left with free water ) it causes osmotic shifts and may lyse (or explode) the Red Blood Cells.

In addition, Aminophylline is a medication and you don't want to use it to prime your line. Your first concern is compatibility (or the lack thereof).

Hope this helps.
