Transferring to another school after failure

Published

Hi everyone. I have a question about transferring to a different school but with a twist. I am currently enrolled in a private nursing program but failed my second semester but have the opportunity to repeat it. Like most schools, two failures equal dismissal from the program. I won't get into the semantics of why I want to transfer but I understand that if I do I will be starting over since nursing courses are unique to each facility. Since I was not dismissed from my program but am on academic probation, am I eligible to transfer to a community college, or another private institution? Has anyone had any luck doing so?

Generally you won't be accepted for transfer (especially if a competitive program) if you are not in good academic standing. Academic probation is not good academic standing

To follow up on what Beachy said, mostly true. There is an exception though. Programs that only look at your prerequisite GPA. That does mean you're likely looking at ADN programs and community colleges. I do know students though who switched programs to ADN, and did better the second time.

I would also expect to have to pay the first quarter/semester out of pocket. If you're on probation and you change schools, you may not be able to get any financial aid, even loans, until you show the new school you are doing well.
