Traits of successful nurses

Published

What do you guys think are the most important character traits and areas of aptitude necessary for a nurse to succeed?

Specializes in Psychiatry (PMHNP), Family (FNP).

Genuine, sincere and able to witness the full scope of the human condition without becoming jaded or depressed.

Specializes in Hospice.

I'd also add:

- The ability to think critically

- The ability to be flexible

- The ability to prioritize and manage ones time effectively

- The willingness to lead by example. ( Nothing gets you the respect of your STNA / CNA crew like being willing to get your hands dirty.

- Knowing that in some ways you are not only the nurse to the patient in the bed, but to the family of that patient as well.

Your commitment to your profession.

Not just being there for a paycheck, but being there for your patients 100%.
