Total care

I had two total care patients the other day and I am quite small and petite. I was definitely sore the next day and my lower back was in pain. How can I really avoid back pain and injury? I am doing all the right steps such as raising the bed, bending at the hips, using another person to help me etc.

My last job in ICU I was in my late 50's, working with a majority of nurses in their 20's and 30's. I constantly heard complaints of sore this and that, and injuries etc. Most of the time I ran circles around them because I was in great shape. Besides paying attention to all of the body mechanic guidance that you probably received in orientation, one suggestion I can make is to get in shape with strength training, core work etc. I know a lot of nurses are very busy with work, home, kids etc., but it is really a good investment to make in yourself...I know a lot of nurses sidelined with injuries that end up really impacting their career.
