Too Soon to Apply?

I've been monitoring local hospital Web sites for LPN job postings and noticed a new posting today at my first choice hospital, for a unit I'd really like to work on. The issue is that I won't graduate until next month, and according to faculty, my school sends transcripts to the BON rather late, meaning I won't be able to take the NCLEX-PN until early October.

Do I have a chance at being offered the job if I apply now? If not, is there the possibility that I could be offered a "future" job on another unit?

Or should I calm down and just keep watching listings until I get closer to the test date?

I'd love to hear from people who've experienced a similar situation, or even those who haven't.

Thanks for any advice.

It's perfectly normal and common to start job-hunting before you've actually graduated and gotten licensed, and I would think the hospital would take it as a positive sign that you're so enthusiastic about their facility and that particular position. I would say go for it, definitely. Can't hurt to ask! :)

Also, some places are v. slow about going through the interview/hiring process, so you might actually have your license by the time you would get around to starting work.

Here is my suggestion-if you know the unit make an appointment

with the nurse manager to introduce yourself. Let her know

that you will be graduating and taking the boards. Give her

a resume and let her know you will stay in contact with her

about future opportunities. Then go to personnel.

Its been my experience if you go to personnel first, often

nothing happens. It will give you good experience to test

drive introducing yourself to the nurse mgr. She will be aware

of your interest. The trick is to call every so often to update

her and to obtain info about openings.
