TNCC Advice Needed!

Published

Hi guys!

I recently took the TNCC course and did not pass the written exam. The lectures were barely finished and I did not feel like I had been given any direction on what to focus my studies by the end of Day 1. It has been almost two weeks since I took the exam and I feel like everything I gained through lecture is slowly slipping away. i have lost all confidence :( I would love some input on how to go about focusing my studies as well as tips on how to best go about the process of elimination while looking at a test question. I did not find them to be similar to NCLEX (ABC). I have attempted to find practice questions and have not had much luck..I am having a freak out moment so..ANY feedback would be MUCH appreciated!

Did you read the text prior to going to the class?

I did skim over the book prior to class.

I don't understand taking TNCC if you are not prepared to read the book from cover to cover and study the contents well. Are you a new grad? Do you have any nursing experience? There is a huge amount of information in the book. Why would you take such a course as TNCC without preparing as thoroughly as you could for it? This course is about taking care of patients who have experienced trauma, and is generally required for nurses working in the ER. Why would you expect the material to be so light and easy to assimilate that you don't even need to read the book properly?

The only people who fail TNCC are those who never even opened the book.

It very easy to identify who they are during the lectures.

Skimming is not the same as reading. As an adult you are past the point of spoon feeding you information and giving you hints as to what will be on the test. You were not prepared and you failed. My tip for you is to read the book and take notes as you do.

I know a lot of seasoned nurses that fail the written part even after reading the book so don't feel bad. I worked at a level one ER and was required to have it as a new grad. I just retook the course last week since mine expired and found the questions very similar to the certified emergency nurses exam, which I just passed. You need to definitely study different types of shocks, symptoms of cardiac tamponade and the triad associated with it, tension pneumo and symptoms. The CEN questions are very similar to the test. ENPC don't bother. Definitely go back over you TNCC book.
