Hello,
I am currently a LPN nursing student and a mother of 3. I have been thinking that once I have graduated from school I am looking at moving either to TX of FL. The biggest thing is that I want to move somewhere I can find a decent job, the cost of living will not kill me and hopefully look a purchasing a home. I have been reading about FL and to tell you the truth I am getting pretty scared about moving there!!! As for TX, do they even hire LPN's? How is the cost of living out there? Would I be able to find a decent place to live. The main areas I have been looking at moving to are San Antonio and Houston. I know nothing about neither cities and I will have no family. It will be a very new start for me and my kids!!! Please any help that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Please consider Fort Worth. A lot of jobs here, and housing is very affordable. A much more pleasant place than Houston in my opinion and cheaper than San Antonio.
You might try contacting "Commuter" as she is an LPN in this are and can really give you job related info specific to LPN's.
PM me if I can provide any further info. I only normally check in here once or twice a week.

i live (and grew up) 30 miles south of ft worth in a small but growing town. i have worked in ft worth and have made anywhere from $20-26 as a staff nurse at various nursing homes. i can tell you that i have been offered $22 at the kindred (rehab hospital ) in southwest ft worth but i also have experience. for me personally , i wont live in ft worth or any of it's suburbs. it is congested and crowded. there are some areas that are nicer than others hulen (southwest ft worth) to me is one of the better areas. however, any big city is congested these days. i cant really tell you about the schools in ft worth, but i know crowley (which is where the commuter lives) has a rep for good schools. as far as cost of living , i have never lived anywhere else so i really cant compare. i know that you can get a nice decent home for under $100k... you can rent a apartment (2 maybe 3 bedroom) for 500-600/month. one thing to consider her is the heat..it gets hot . this year has been very unusual as we have only had a couple of over 100 days.. but usually we get 1.5 months easy...my electric bill has been $500 for the last 2 months but we have 5 kids here to...as far as san anton it is a tourist area and more expensive place to live ..houston..oh i wont even drive in houston.... good luck to you ...

Hi LPN08,
Listen to Txspadequeen, she has good advice. LVNs are needed here in Texas - and you can make some good money doing it. I live in the North Texas area (about 25 miles north of Dallas) and commute to Dallas to work. I work nights so traffic is not bad most of the time. Please consider the DFW area - it has a lot to offer, and it's close enough to Austin, San Antonio and (if you must go there) Houston.
I also have an RN friend who took a travel position in FL a couple of years ago and he told me what he was making...barely more than I was as a tech at the hospital we worked at together. That spells pathetic in my book...sorry.
The school systems in the N. Texas area are top notch, and the cost of living - even though it's rising...is still better than you'll find in many older, more established cities throughout the US.
Good luck to you. If you have any questions, PMs are a wonderful thing.

Hello! In Texas, LPNs are referred to as 'LVNs.'
I'm an LVN who lives and works in Fort Worth, which is located 30 miles west of Dallas. Fort Worth is a growing city of 653,000 people, yet it manages to have a friendly small town feel. I live in suburban Fort Worth, in the Hulen Street area that TxSpadeQueen described in her earlier post on this thread. My part of town is also known as the North Crowley area, since it is very close to the Crowley city limits. The Crowley Independent School District has a stellar reputation around here, and my neighborhood happens to be served by them. Therefore, your children should receive a good education if they were to move to this area. Another nice suburban area inside the Fort Worth city limit is Fossil Creek.
I have only 1.5 years of experience, and have never had any problems finding work. The LVN jobs here are very plentiful, with very little competition. Nursing homes, rehab hospitals, home health agencies, assisted living facilities, and skilled nursing facilities offer the highest pay rates.
Also, the cost of living here is great. My 1,900 square foot house was built in 2004 and cost around $100,000. Prices for single family homes are still very cheap around here. Groceries are reasonably priced. I have two newer vehicles (a 2006 Toyota and 2005 Silverado truck). I have enough money saved to survive on for at least 1 year in the event of a serious occurrence or life change such as unemployment or illness. And, I always have money left over at the end of the month when my minimal bills are paid. By the way, I am a single female who has never had financial help from a spouse or boyfriend.
Some Fort Worth suburbs include the Mid-Cities (Hurst, Bedford, Euless, North Richland Hills), Arlington, Crowley, Benbrook, Saginaw, Keller, Roanoke, and Lake Worth. Some good school districts (ISDs) include Eagle Mountain, Crowley, Birdville, HEB, and Keller.
