thinking of relocating to houston

i graduated 2009 and worked at a hospital in postpartum for 9 months in lubbock texas and then had to come back to nj, where i am originally from. I cannot find a job in a facility in nj so I am working in a pediatric homehealth agency right now and was thinking of trying texas again since i have my texas license already. It would not be until early next year that way I can get a full year in pediatric home health and I am not jumping around so much. This time I wanted to try a city since it would not be such a culture shock from nj and it is more diverse than lubbock was. I was really looking at houston but I am hearing such mixed reviews. I called st. luke's to ask about the new grad program but the problem is I am not a new grad anymore but I do not have two years of experience. Does anyone know or work at any place who would be willing to hire a nurse who has a year of experience (9 months in the hospital in postpartum and 3 months in pediatric home health)? Any suggestions would be very appreciated!

God bless!

My advice - contact the hospitals directly to get this information. We're still in expansion mode in most areas - but (strangely enough) Texas Childrens - in the Med Center- is experiencing a 'downturn' recently and may be facing some severe budget cuts. So you probably would not get a satisfactory response from them.

The New Grad programs are a lot smaller these days - and some are only accepting BSN grads. But you will probably be successful if you explore options in outlying areas & avoid the Med Center.

Houston is very diverse with all the cultural ammenities. Heck, we are what you would get if you took NYC and stretched it out 60 miles wide - LOL. No two Tx cities are alike, but you can't get much different than Houston & Lubbock - which actually is a city (honestly) just not as jam-packed as you may be used to. We like a lot of free space & elbow room in our cities.

ok i will try that so far i have only gotten in contact with st. luke's but i will definitely try more! thanks for your help!

You will find something! I am a '09 new grad with a lot less experience than you have (with an ADN to boot) and have had MANY recent job offers in the past 3 months from hospitals. I finally had to start turning down interviews because it was getting out of control. I am very picky and I was looking for the perfect fit for me, in a specialty I like, at a place I could stay long term at, etc etc- and thankfully I finally found it! :) You will too, especially if you are half as picky as I am!

I am in the Houston area and have been job hunting for 5 months (new grad).... almost every position is wanting 1-2yrs of experience. Stay put until you get your 1 year, then give it a try

Are you serious? You are turning down interviews? This is AWESOME to hear. Most of the posts, including my own, speak of difficulty finding a job. Yay! for you.

What perfect job did you get? Kudos to you! Congratulations.
