Thinking of becoming a case manager

I have never worked for any BCBS but have worked with them and have worked from home. Working from home is really different. Yeah, you can work in PJs but they can supervise every key stroke ( and if what you do is not a keystroke - it doesn't count) and for me that was very stressful. The lack of everyday social interaction can be tough too. Your work load is all you can handle and then when someone is out ( like everyday) you will get a piece of their workload too. Probably the main reason I never worked for them is they feel just because you don't have to drive to work they can pay 10k+ less a year. (or maybe it's because the supply of disgruntled hospital nurses is endless).

I currently work for bcbs and have been for the last year and a half. I love my job. I have been a nurse for 10 years prior to working for this company and all of my experience has been at the bedside. I got burned out at the bedside and this was a refreshing change. I am still working from the office but will get the oppurtunity to telecommute next month. I do not miss bedside care and I love the schedule. I work 4 10 hour shifts. No weekends or holidays. I hope to be with this company a long time. I make about the same as I was in the hospital. So that makes it a lot better. No, we are not confined to our computers with someone monitoring our every move. As long as your tasks are up to date there is no problems.

Do you mind sharing how you obtained your job with BCBS? In my area of SE Pennsylvania, most case management positions require experience or certification. I would also like to make the change from pediatric intensive care to case management due to impending physical limitations but don't know where to begin.

I went on their website and applied. It took about a month to get an interview. But after interviewing I was offered a position the next week. The position required five years of varied experience and I will be sitting for the CCM exam in March. You can go to different job search websites like career builders, simply hired and indeed and enter case management and your state and see what the results are. You can also go the the individual insurance companies websites and view what is available. But all in all I owe the credit to God because he opened this door for me. I know I applied for over 50 positions that were not bedside positions before this position was offered to me.

I did go BCBS web site. Apparently , there are no positions open at present in my neck of the woods. But, I registered to be notified when something opens up. That's as far as I could get with them. It seems that they do their own case management training. No need for me to get a BS degree to enter the field.
