Text books

Hi All: I'm a first year nursing student and I'm wondering about buying vs. loaning text books for my courses. When you were first out there on the floors did you find yourself refering back to your text books to find answers to clinical questions? I can check out the books from the school's library but I'm wondering if later on will I want to refer back to the books? To do that it would be easier to have them at home rather than going to the library. Yes I am really cheap :D

I borrowed books my last year of nursing school and did fine. I have kept only a few, having to do with my area of practice. The rest get outdated quickly and you can get new info via Internet or continuing education fairly easy. I don't see people referring too much to textbooks on the floor. Anyway, there are some laying around that were donated by graduating nurses.

As I look at my bookcase in my study, I see my pediatrics text dated 1972. Children have not changed very much since 72' but the way we care for them has.

The fact that you can check them out of the library is amazing and I would do that. I advise all my students on day one of class to purchase a comprehensive review of Nursing, the kind people buy to study for the National Nursing Boards. Personally I like any book published by Mosby. Another way to go is to buy "Core Curriculums of Nursing Specialties" like Oncology Nursing Society Core Curriculum for Oncology Nursing. This way you have all the answers in outline form, at your fingertips. Used book stores work well also.

THE BEST SERIES OF BOOKS TO BUY ARE THE NURSING SECRETS BOOKS. They are texts books but read like interesting novels, they tell stories that are easy to understand. I received a near perfect score because I used this book to study.

Bottom line, rent or borrow the text books and purchase the reviews.

I used the Oncology Nursing Secrets book to study for the Oncology Nursing Certification Exam given by ONS, and got a near perfect score.

I am always around to lend an opinion, and If I have no answer, I am honest. I will always help write care plans because no matter how I tried, I could never get the grasp of what my instructors wanted, no matter how I tried. I finally got it after getting a concussion from banging my head on the wall, so if you have problems, PM me.
