Texas PMHNP programs

Hello All

Applied to Texas State, UTA, MSU and thinking of applying to Texas Tech as well. I've noticed the program credit hours vary from 40-49 hours and not sure which program has the best reputation for preparing you for a career as a clinician. It's appealing to get it done but I want to be safe and well prepared as an NP. Of course cost and how much on campus time required are two things I am looking at as well. I work M-F in an outpatient Psychiatric health clinic as an RN.

Any feedback about experience with school and fulltime job would be great. What should I look for in a good PMHNP online program? Also, please PM me if you have specific information or experience regarding the programs I listed above. Really appreciate your help!

Hi,

I'm planning on applying to the Texas Tech PMHNP program. Any tips from anyone? I've only worked in plastics and ICU. I'm worried about there emphasis on leadership and committees.

I am in UTA's PMHNP program. Most of the basic classes can all be taken totally online, but once you reach the psych classes you can expect to meet on campus about 4 times a semester.

My husband applied to and was accepted to Texas State and Midwestern State for Fall 2019. I was pushing for Midwestern state as they have been around a while and have excellent pass and placement records. He thought the advantage fell to Texas State because their program was 8 months shorter and he's no spring chicken. The thing that concerned me about Texas State was that apparently this last Spring 2019 class was their absolute first class of PMHNP students so it is impossible at this point to evaluate the success and quality of their graduates. They have had an FNP program for a while and seem to have done well with them.

I might be concerned about working full-time in the Texas State program at least the first semester. I believe they plan all the 3Ps the first semester, at least for full-time students. Hubby is anticipating an intense Fall semester.

Thanks for the input Tiffany. I’ve done a lot of investigation since my post so I have some info that may help your husband. Texas State does have a part time option so your husband can probably work FT, at least for the first semester. Yes, it is a new program but as you stated their track record for FNP is very good. I was warned about MSU by a few people so I am not considering them at this point. Will probably do UTA or Texas Tech if accepted but we shall see. Best of luck to your husband and thanks for responding!

Thank you all for the input. I am no spring chicken as well—I like to think of myself as a “fall flower”. Currently looking at UTA, Texas state and UTHSC-Houston's PMHNP programs.

Hi I am currently in the midwestern state FNP program. Tell your husband to run run run the other way. This program is very frustrating and the same professors I had in my RN to BSN translation program have all become completely sink or swim and to say that there is “teaching” going on is quite generous. I would love to hear what others that warned you said.

Hey NurseMartin,

My husband has accepted admission into the Texas State program and just got his program of study, will be working on registering in the next few days. He has declined the acceptance to Midwestern State. I had not heard any warnings about them, that was another poster (Alcroc I think). I had one local nursing professor friend who stated that Midwestern was tough but good.

TiffyRN.

Congrats to your husband!

Please keep us posted on your husbands progress. I’d love to hear his thoughts on the program.

I also got accepted to Texas State PMHNP program. I'm planning on working FT and school FT. Does anyone have any lead on finding preceptors in DFW area? TIA

Good to know mede126! I’ve been waiting to hear about acceptance/denial from UTA. In the meantime I’m applying to Texas State (deadline June 15th) and Texas Tech (deadline August 1st). I was really concerned about UTA having on campus classes while I’m working Monday through Friday 8-5 but since on campus class is only 4 times a semester it could possibly work if I use PTO. I may look at moving into a 12 hour inpatient job at some point because I’m assuming clinicals will interfere with my current job schedule. So much to think about.....

Congratulations LinhNguyen! I am sorry I can’t offer leads on preceptors at this point because I’m still in the application process. May I ask something in regards to the essay and goals for Texas State’s application? I am typing directly into the form they provided on their application page but I’m not sure how many words maximum is allowed. It says three pages so depending on formatting that could vary greatly. Are they expecting APA format? If so that is double spaced three pages which seems a bit short. Thanks in advance for any advice.
