Temporal temperature??

Published

Sorry this may be stupid

but I keep finding different answers

what is the normal temporal temperature for adults?

anything from 36-37 celcius right? depending on day and what is considered there normal?

37 degrees Cecilius isn't considered a fever right? I thought 37.5 degrees C is a fever?

or anything that is a huge jump from their normal??

“Normal” temperature is 37° C (98.6° F), regardless of where it is taken. People will tell you that you need to add 1° C if taken other than rectal, but this is not supported in the literature. When recording the temperature you should also record the location that it was taken. It should be noted, however, that most individuals will vary ~0.5° C – 1° C throughout the course of the day.

37.5° C (99.5° F) is not considered a fever. You will likely find little consensus on exactly what temperature determines a fever. In the PICU where I work, most of the physicians and nurses consider 38.5°C (101.3° F) to be febrile and will treat accordingly. There are some sources that say that the decision to treat the fever be based upon patient comfort rather than a pre-determined temperature level.

37 C is 98.6 F which is normal body temperature so, no, that's not considered a fever. I've never worked anywhere that considered 37.5 C to be a fever either. I agree with chare, 38.5 C is what we called a fever in acute care and when we instruct our outpatient oncology patients to report to the MD. (They also have to call if they have temps > 38 C/100.4F twice in a 24 hr period.)
