tattoos

Hey I was just wondering if any of you nurses or nursing students have tattoos. I have a butterfly on my right foot. Is this a problem since I want to be a nurse? I wanted to get one or two more, but wanted to get some of you all opinions before I get them. I don't want many because it can look unprofessional. I just want some small ones. I would like to get a small one in the back of my neck, but that probably wouldn't be a good idea. Would it?

Has any instructors said anything to you while in nursing school about tattoos?

Do tattoos affect job opportunities?

Thanks

There was a lengthy thread on this just a week or so ago. Hit the search and I think you will get a lot of opinions on this subject.

I would imagine as long as they're not visible you shouldn't have a problem.

I have one on my lower back. None of my instructors have ever said anything about it. If you get them in places you can hide, it won't be unprofessional. No one is likely to see the one on your foot. If you get one on the back of your neck, it will show, and will look unprofessional in my opinion. Good luck making your decision. ;)

I have one on my lower stomach/hip area so it's obviously not an issue. Personally, I would not go for the one on the neck. I also can't stand when women have tattoos on their arms....eek! Please don't take offense if anyone here has one....it just creeps me out for some reason. :D

So, yes...I would stick to feet and other places that can easily be covered. Good luck!

*Also....my fiance has a tattoo on his arm and I can't stand it!!! lol :)

I'm a nursing student and have 2, but they are in places that aren't seen with my uniform on. We were told that if we had them and they could be seen, we had to cover them with bandages or wraps during clinicals. I wouldn't get one on my neck because we have to have our hair pulled back so it won't fall on the patient.

In school it may be different, but I know a couple of nurses who have small tattoos on the backs of their necks which are visible. Some nurses and techs have facial piercings(small) and they're allowed to wear them. I had a tongue piercing for a while and no one said anything.

Depends on your hospital, I think.

Thank you guys soooo much!!! Im not going to go with the tattoo on my neck. I'll just stick to places that are not visible.

I have seen instructors with tattoos. Our facility allows them if they are covered. We have some employees with tattoos on arms and legs that do show, but evidently no one has taken offense. Just don't get too gothic - that would scare me to death to wake up and have a totally gothic nurse at my bedside :)

The facility and school I am at has a "non offensive" stance on tattoos. They can be visible but they cant be nasty or naked girls or scary or anthing like that.

I cant imagine you would have your feet showing while you were on the clock. :) My back is covered with tattoos, you cant see them unless Im wearing a tank top or spagetti strap shirt, and thats not something I wear to the hospital too often (i.e. never!!)

I have a couple tattoos on my upper arm. They show when I'm reaching and stretching. But I'm not the only one, a few of the male nurses have sleeves, and there are other nurses with facial piercings. No one really minds at my facility except the CEO. He stares at the tattoos and piercings like you have crap smeared on you. lol... I think it's funny.
