I am a nurse manager of a 42 bed med/ surg unit and have been asked to write a strategic plan for my unit. I do not have a template to go by. Does anyone have one they could share. I am also very interested in corresponding with other nurse managers about the challenges we all face.
Thanks,

Sorry you have not had a response yet. I guess I am a little confused as to why they want you to do a strategic plan? In most cases, a plan of this nature would require maketing related information related to things happening outside of the hospital. Of course, if you are looking at a new product line, you could put together a clinical implementation plan as a part of the overall strategic plan.
Do you have any other information so we can better help you?
As far as talking with others .... you can certainly email me and I would be happy to share the pains of being a nurse manager. It can be and often is a thankless and tough job ... but heck, someone has to do it.
Good luck and let us know if you need more information on the strategic plan.

I usually start with a SWOT evaluation of internal and external issues:
Strengths
Weaknesses
Opportunites
Threats
Fiscal information is important/compare year to year and such.
Plans for upsizing or downsizing/adding programs is important. Any new key docs your going after to get more referrals to your floor?
I would do it in a group/group input and you will get much information via that method plus get some unit by in. Pick out your floor leaders who are the movers and shakers.
Is this being used to develop an entire hospital program or is it just unique and alone to your unit?
Let me think on it some more.
