Starting new at SNF

Hi everyone,

Im a graduate nurse, and I just had an interview at a SNF. I've never been at a SNF before, and I've only been in the hospital. Can anyone give me an idea what a typical day is? The training that I'll receive if I'm hired, is 3 days, 5 days max.

A typical day depends on the kind of place it is. Are the residents mostly long term? If so, most days will be med pass and treatments and charting. Is it a subacute/rehab place? You never know what will happen there...meds, treatments, more charting, admissions, discharges and who knows what else. Good luck.

3 days orientation for a new grad???? LTC typically doesn't give the orientation that a hospital gives but 3 DAYS and you're a brand new nurse.

Do not hesitate to politely go to the DON and request additional time after your first day or two. Remind her that you have no experience and wish to provide safe competent care to the residents. With any luck she will see the wisdom in this..if she doesn't you may want to rethink employment with this company. We generally give newbies 6 days to 2 weeks (we have 2 halls x's 3 shifts - and this rarely gives them enough time. We use the extra days on the unit/shift they are most likely to be assigned).

Your first day is going to be very overwhelming even if you are lucky enough to be in the best facility possible - take a deep breath and relax. Everyone is scared at first.

Is it H*LL like the hospital? I almost thought I was hearing wrong, when the patient ration was 30:1. I still dont know if I heard right. But if training is 3 days to 5 days max...I figured it would just be passing meds. But than, I wanted to those that worked in LTC.

THANKS!!
