Starting to not like sc

I've worked in nsg homes, clinics, and home care back in ny. The only reason I applied for correctional nsg in SC, because I couldn't find work anywhere else, and I was pregnant at the time, so I really needed medical benefits. But after being dashed by one of the inmates with feces, urine, and who knows what other body fluids while being 9 mths pregnant, and going back to work after maternity leave was over, I just couldn't do it anymore. Between the inmates threatening me and the officers acting like they were afraid of the inmates, I no longer felt safe, and I felt I was having a nervous breakdown while passing out meds in lockup. I have been on interviews, but I don't know if its that I have very long dreads(which I always wear pulled back and up), or I don't sound like everyone else down here, that they do not want to give me a chance. I had an interview the other day and the manager said to me well you clearly have the experience, and when I answered ques he would say good answer( I thought I was on family feud for a while!!) I don't know what to do any more. It's really discouraging! Any suggestions !?

Have you tried Carolina Pines in Hartsville? I know they used to hire a lot of LPNs as floor nurses & they have a posting for LPNs:

McLeod & Carolinas are tough to get into during good times if you don't know someone, so I only imagine they are impossible to get into now. I am surprised they even gave you an interview.

On a different note, I always heard from the nurses that worked in prisons that it was easy work. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience.

the work in corrections was extremely easy. It was dealing with some of the inmates. For the most part alot of them were respectful, believe it or not, but some you could certainly understand why they were there. thanks for the suggestion!

Are you prepared in any other area of nursing. DO you like SC just not where you work? If it's the state, its people, its economy, its pay scale , in other words things you have NO personal control over, then you are not going to be happy. What exactly are your options? I've lived here my whole life, other than 1 1/2 years when hubby was in the army. I like it here. It took me many years to find my niche and I can tell you it was tough. More like 10 years than 5.

That is such a rude response. She can't find a job...she said nothing about the state. Why don't you not answer if your going to be rude.

I feel the same as you and I am in columbia...I came from WA and FL. and there you can find a job as an LPN in 1 day no kidding. I have been looking all around here and I can't find anything. I am going to apply at places in FL. now and just commute as I have family there. This state is weird. I have never lived anywhere like this state and I have lived in a few. The nurses here have BIG egos too. We are not scientists...we are nurses...most are dumb as rocks anyway. Good luck to you.

It's good to know it's not just me. Like I mentioned in my post I have very long locks, and the looks that I get from people sometimes. It's like I have 2 heads or something. I've actually had people asked me if I could touch my hair. In this day and age when people have dreads I can't believe it's such a big deal. Maybe if some of the people down here were more open minded that we don't all have to look or sound alike I would be able to find work. The state itself is nice. I do admit I do enjoy the weather compared to NY.

I got looks anytime I ley my hair down at any job. They like your hair to be "up" dreads or not.

I ALWAYS wear my hair up, whenever I go outside. I remember after I first started my nsg job with corrections, the don said to me that I might want to consider cutting my hair. Mind you this is the same woman who interviewed me and offered me the job. So she knew exactly what type of hair I had. I was stunned that she even made such a statement. Needless to say after that she was defintely not one of my favorite people!
