STABLE program

STABLE is a program designed to stabilize babies, basically. Amazon has the book if you want to purchase it. You can also google STABLE and order it straight. It covers the basics and has some great information.

We use it for our NICU orientation and find it very helpful. It is also good, and in fact designed, for hospitals that need to transport sick babies to a higher level NICU.

Thank you for the information. One more question, if I just buy the book, how is that proof to a future employer that I have the knowledge needed? Wouldn't I need to take some sort of test/class and get a certificate of sorts? Perhaps I misunderstood the job requirements...

There is a day class that would get you a certificate. I did look up the stable website and I didn't see any classes in Oregon. It was a bit confusing as Oregon was stuck in the middle of the Oklahoma classes.

I imagine some hospitals would teach it if it were a job requirement--then they would pay for you to attend :). I would call HR at one of those hospitals and ask if it were a job requirement or just on their wish list. They are a pretty good resource for where you would go to find a class--or they might just tell you to wait until after you were hired. If you don't live in Oregon, could you take the class where you currently live? It would definitely transfer.

I would recommend the book anyway, because it is very useful.

I have seen a few job openings in Oregon (in maternity nursing) that require STABLE course work. I have looked this information up online but I can't seem to find any classes actually offered in Oregon (which I thought was strange considering its a requirement to apply for a job). Has anyone heard of this program? Any information you have would be appreciated!

I am a new grad in Oregon and there aren't a lot of STABLE courses offered in the state. Actually most of the classes offered are actually recertification classes, not initial certification courses. The next class I can take is two months from now and I will have to drive two hours away from Portland to take it.

It's kind of ridiculous that this is now a requirement before employment and yet it's so hard to find a class, but the nursing market is completely saturated in Portland (we have 25 amazing nursing schools here) and so employers have their pick and can make lofty demands; they like to ask that you have all those certifications prior to hire because then that's one less expense for them.

There aren't that many S.T.A.B.L.E. classes around, that I've seen.

I looked for one for quite a long time and then stumbled into one at a per diem job that I had. It was given by the transport team from a large, teaching hospital NICU. To find a class, I would contact the transport team from the hospital that's affiliated with OHSU or one of the other large hospitals up there.

I know that REACH teaches it internally but you might be able to access the class through them (I know that they're in Corvallis... not sure about other parts of Oregon).
