1st class at OCC

U.S.A. Michigan

I will be starting my first class next week at OCC. Its been 17 years since Ive been in a classroom and I'm wondering what the hell I'm doing going back to school now. I'm really worried after all Ive read about how hard it is to get into nursing school. If I dont get straight A's what in heck am I going to do with all pre-req creidts? How will I ever pay back student loans if I get B's or C's?

Congratulations on your return to school!!!!!:yelclap:

I do not go to your school, but I also waited 17 years to go back, and let me tell you: it's wonderful!!!!

The one thing I have noticed at HFCC is that alot of the teachers tell you not to work for the grade. Work for the knowledge. The A's will then come easy to you. Don't kill yourself trying to get the A- just make sure you understand what they are teaching you.

I'm not sure about OCC, but at HFCC the requirement is the pre-reqs and a 2.5 gpa (for nursing). That's easy! So just relax, you are going to do just great! Welcome back to the madness!

I waited 16 yrs to go to back to school too (had never gone to college after high school graduation). I got an A- in my first course (English Comp) so I kept going and got solid As in all my other courses (Nutrition, psychology, comparative religions, A&P). I have to say that when you are paying for your education yourself, it really makes you work hard for your grades!

Thank you so much for the encouragement. I almost dropped my class because I'm so nervous about leaving my kids 1 night a week. I know it must sound paranoid to some but Ive always been a full time Mom, I never even worked. I am paying for this out of my own pocket so I'm going to give it my best try. When I took the placement tests I did much better than I thought. I decided to take a class below what I tested into because I want to do well and work my way up. Next semester I want to take 2 classes.

Hi Anne,

You didn't mention which class you are currently enrolled in, but most of the prereqs needed to apply to the nursing program are general and apply to most programs. I think that once you have a few of the required basic courses behind you, you will have a better idea as to whether or not you are headed in the right direction. You can always change your course of study at that time and the classes you have already completed will not have been a waste.

I am currently a first year nursing student at OCC and at the time I started my prereqs it had been 25 yrs since I had graduated high school. I was nervous and excited, but I was also determined. I've had a few set backs such as having to repeat a Chem course to achieve the desired grade and then finding out that a Bio credit that I was told counted, didn't and had I to take another Bio class. Then last fall, as I finally started the nursing program, my car broke down and I couldn't afford the repairs, so I had to restart this fall. But, having worked my tail off and gotten a better car, here I am again at the start of the 2 yr RN program and still nervous and excited! I'm 46 now and I'll be 48 when I graduate, but ya know what? In 2 yrs, I'll be 48 nomatter what and I can use that time to accomplish my goal or not. That's the way I see it. So...what if I have another setback? What do you think I'll do? Never give up! Good Luck : )
