SPC

hi, curious to know if anyone is attending st. petersburg college here in fl. i'm planning on going into the nursing program next fall!! :) i'm wrapping up my last year of prerequisites!! i'm currently taking a&p 1, college algebra, a&p 1 lab, american national government (goes towards bsn), and humanities east-west synthesis. yep i have a full plate...plus having a life and working part time!

also, any users in or have been through the nursing program here at spc?! any feedback is much appreciated.

*also have my cna as of june and i would love to start working in the medical field, preferably hospital but with the economy... many places are in a hiring freeze! :( thanks for any input!!

Same here - I'm in Clearwater. This semester I have A & P II, Psychology (both on-line) and Speech (blended). Next semester is Micro and Statistics, then I'm done. Will apply this Spring for a Fall 2010 seat. Hopefully! I'll also be taking PHCC's Nutrition course so I'll be applying there as well - just in case.

Interesting about the CNA - was thinking of getting mine late this fall. Would love some input on where you went, your thoughts, etc. PM me anytime if you'd like. Thanks!

Sharon

What's PM? I'm at Tarpon and next semester I'm planning on taking a&P 2, statistics, and the computer course that's pretty much required..and I'm thinking over the summer microbiology..then i'm done with the basics :) I wasn't sure when I should apply..but I guess I should get with an advisor?! I'm worried about getting into SPC's program because I live in Pasco and they take people that are in Pinellas first :(

For my CNA I went to FL Med Prep. Their website is beacna.com Definitely go to the Largo center... I loved the staff they were great and very helpful.

PM = Private message. It's one of the options (icon with a little piece of paper with a pencil on it) here where you can communicate one on one with other members.

I know you have to have A&P I and II (w/ labs), Pyschology and the Computer course done before you can apply. I've heard that candidates that have ALL their pre-reqs done with the highest GPA are selected first. I'm not sure how much importance SPC places on residency...I know PHCC told me, their criteria states a preference for Pasco/Hernando county residents too, but it really amounts to very little. I'd apply as soon as you can - but definitely check in with an advisor - they've all been very helpful to me.

Thanks for the web site. I'll definitely check it out. Thanks!

Sharon

yea, the classes i listed above are the only classes i have left to take. which is confusing because that makes since that you have to complete the a&p courses before applying because they are major components to nursing...although if i wait to apply i won't make it into the fall program...yes, i'll definitely have to get with an advisor.

another thing about the cna it's really hard to find work right now. oh, and i wouldn't recommend taking the cna class while starting the nursing program... you said earlier in the fall! it's a lot of studying for the state exam which is anywhere from two weeks to four months after you’ve taken the class. good luck!!

Re: CNA - true. I'm thinking about mid-fall this year, so I'll have time to study, etc. and take the test before I need to find work in February or so. I'll be applying for the Fall 2010 nursing program. I'd like to make sure this is the field for me, as well as maybe get my foot in the door somewhere or at least not stress out so much the first part of nursing school when we have to learn alot of CNA work anyway.

Good luck!

All I can say is good luck!!! I applied for the Jan 2010 @ SPC and the first round of letters I didn't get in. It said that the average GPA was a 3.66! So GET A'S !!:)lol. The second and final rejection/acceptance letters are going out this week... A friend of mine is in the program and she has a HUGE workload...she also got into the EAYL program..but overall I have heard great things about the instructors and the program..good luck!!!! :)

Actually, a 3.66 GPA would be a relief! I keep hearing 3.9 GPA...and am busting my behind to get there...not that I'll let up, because who knows what the competition will be like in the Spring. And it'll be good "practice" for nursing school!

Good luck to you Morgan0429...hope you're accepted in this next round!

ugh.. I have a 3.375 right now.. I'm in my second week of A and P 1 and it's tough..the chemistry!! These science classes really scare me! So far I've made all A's and B's!! I hope I can make A's! But this is crazy.. so my life long dream of being an RN could be crushed?! and I live in Pasco which I know SPC takes students in Pinellas county first.. but at the same time yea they have a good program..and yea I want in!! I can't see myself doing anything other than nursing so what.. if I don't make it?!! OMG!!

I thought the chemistry part of A & P I was hard too...it does get easier and more relevant. Hang in there! I'm in A&P II this semester and feel like I've forgotten everything from I...though it seems to be slowly coming back. I need to get A's in all my remaining classes to get to that 3.9 GPA. Pretty daunting since I have Micro and Stats left after this. But, I have to take it one day at a time, one assignment, one paper, one quiz, one test - otherwise I'd be overwhelmed. Focus on what you have in front of you and what you can control now. The rest will come.

I thought I read somewhere that the EAYL programs don't require as high a GPA - they're looking at you as a whole package, not just a piece or two. That's one alternative (besides all the other great opportunities they offer). Another is applying to PHCC (credits between the schools are evenly transferable - so I can come back to SPC for my BSN). Finally, if it comes down to it and I don't get in either school, I'll go to PTEC, get my LPN and apply for the LPN-RN bridge at SPC - the criteria to get in that way is easier. Lots of ways to go about this, so don't give up hope.

Breathe! You're not alone!

lol!! thanks so much and yea I need to take one day at a time!!

scrapworking is correct...the EAYL program doesn't look at GPA like SPC does. I have my first interview for them in a few weeks. They pretty much base it upon the interviews...yeah you have to have a 2.75 to apply and it looks better if you DONT need to have Micro done... good luck to all :)
