I graduated when I was 40 with my ADN and am currently working on my post RN to BSN at Grand Canyon University. It was a lifelong dream of mine to become a nurse and due to circumstances I pursued it (husband was out of work for a while due to lay off and illness). I believe it already has opened a lot of doors and has the potential to be even more fulfilling in the years to come. Now my husband and I both have flourishing careers. It is so worth it!!! Good luck to you!!!

Well, I am not in my 40's but definately older than most at 28. I too am applying for Polytech starting Jan 2009. Doing my pre-reqs with these younger students shows me that age is only a blessing, no disadvantage at all. I started this path almost 10 years ago, and I am so much wiser, mature, and confident than I was at 18. It will make us better nurses!!
Thanks for the support! I will actually be 50 when I finish! (If I get in and follow the path I hope to). I can't imagine being a nurse and having the maturity to deal with families, death and dying, etc. when I was in my twenties. I guess it all depends on your personality and life experience. I also had the disadvantage of looking extremely young. It is an advantage now, obviously. I worked as a nurses aide throughout undergrad and patients and families couldn't believe I was out of high school. When I was 32 and pregnant, I couldn't wear my wedding ring and people thought I was an unwed pregnant teenager!

I was completing the pre-reqs getting ready to apply to the ASU Polytech program when I found UA's 2nd degree ABSN program. Not only were there fewer pre-reqs (which was a bonus!) I had taken all of them!
I found the program last Oct, applied, was accepted and I start Jun 9th.
I turn 55 next month and will graduate at 56.
So... 40 something doesn't seem like a big deal to me!!! :)
Good luck!

I just love this whole darn post! I was feeling so down about being 28 & not near where I want to be to start school & it seemed I was passing up my 'good working days' being young & all. I want to be a SAHM until my now 3 yr. old starts school & be available a bit more for my 9 yr. old) I'll be 30 when she starts school, but it really has made me so much more eager to learn & I have really gotten the time to figure out what I want to do for work & be a hands on Mom. Sad to say I needed to read this to feel this way but it worked : ) & I feel much better now!!!! thank you!
You have plenty of time - you are 28, you already have kids and soon both will be in school. You have it made! Take your prereqs at a pace that works with your family needs. Don't overstress, but keep your goal in mind. They become independent so fast and instead of being sad that they don't need you anymore, you will off pursuing your nursing career!
Thank you! I guess it's easy to take things for granted. It's so darn easy to feel like crap & get discouraged lol. Thanks again!
