Hello everyone!
I was hoping for some help...
I have to do a presentation on "What is Dehydration, and how do we physically assess it"... and I really would like something other than the boring slide show and talking at the class.
Does anyone have any idea's as to what I can do... demonstrations or something that may involve the class etc. and they are a very...ummm... unparticipating/quiet group!!
I have just thought about maybe a demo with a sponge... but that is all I can think of. I am open to anything else!
Any any any suggestions would be great!:bowingpur

Try brainstorming - ask them certain questions. And have handouts to prove that you have researched the topic.

Maybe divide the class up into groups and give them a slip of paper with causes of dehydration and act it out. The sillier the better. We did campy stuff all the time and not only was it fun, but it does help you remember. You can even bring in props if you like--a ribbon for a racer to run through, maybe a water bottle filled with sand, maybe even one of those sanitary paper sheets they use to cover toilet seats . Have fun with it .
Have the class guess at the cause of dehydration as the group is acting out. Maybe this will wake them up :). Then you can go into assessment and whatever else you want to cover.
I agree with Nyapa about handouts.

We´ve just had the second week of student seminars where I am studying. The people that presented this week did things like having quizzes where there were small prizes and matching games (one of the seminars was on bacteria and they had balloons in the various shapes that had to be matched on a chart).
I did my seminar in the previous week on the neonate skull and mostly did a powerpoint presentation, but tried to include some interesting facts and strong images, which I received a positive response to... I also had a skull to pass around.
How did your presentation go?
Hi. Thank you!
It went Ok. I am a believer in learn by doing... so I got them to perform a physical examination on the person next to them. They enjoyed it. Got them to play with the sponges that I had dried and a cup of water!!
I got marked down for not telling them about the scale in what dehydration is categorized in... such as 2% dehydrated, or 5% dehydrated... I just didn't find anything on it. I was able to find a table of symptoms and then if you have 3 or less symptoms mild dehydration, 3-6 moderate, more than 6 is severe, but not the %. Does anyone know about the % scale?
So yeah. Glad it is over... that is until we start the next unit!!!

Congratulations on your success! :yeah:But gee, its not as if your scale was any different to the one they wanted...
Congratulations! It sounds like your presentation went well.

Hi Asnurse 2B
I'd use a couple of stockings. These represent two arms one of which is not as firmly filled as the other with the second hydrated arm being smoother. Use some talcum powder. They should be able to pinch up the stocking part which will drop back slowly into place as the filling is not as firmly packed or smooth. Send small piece of paper around to each of them. ask them to vote for which is the dehydrated arm and why. I don't know what you could fill them with but you might be able to get some old pillows cheaply. For anyone else who can answer additional signs attributed to dehydration. What they'd check for or how they'd fix it, have a bag of lollipops for the right anwers. If you gave a powerpoint presentation using say Mr Silly dehydrated mowing on hot day or Mr right with slip slop slap, hat glasses and sunscreen then a big bottle of water for Mr thirsty? it could be a success. They don't all have to be cut and dried or boring. Let me know how you go.

What a clever idea.
