Some interview tips

Published

In today's competitive environment, you need every advantage that you can get. I was at an agency today applying for a CNA job - won't mention agency name - but anyway, the recruiter there mentioned that she didn't hire someone because that person wore very heavy makeup, and she was trying to figure out how to politely let the person know that.

And just to let you know - I was wearing eyeliner, eyeshadow, mascara and blush when I showed up at this agency, but I try to use a light touch when putting on makeup. I immediately got to sign on with the agency. (I also showed up dressed fairly conservatively, in a suit and heels.) So I don't feel this woman expects people to show up looking like a nun.

If you are working in healthcare, keep in mind that you will very likely be working with older people at some point, and older people tend to be more conservative, and the agency does not want to offend or alarm them. Big facial piercings, visible tattoos, multi-colored hair, etc. - these are all things that can be a turnoff to potential employer in the healthcare industry. Take out the piercings, wear clothing that conceals the tattoos, tone down the makeup, change the hairstyle, and you will greatly increase your chance of getting hired. May not be fair, but life's not fair.

I also got rid of my beloved long acrylic nails before I went to the interview. And while in the past my hair was a lot more multicolored, I toned it way down several weeks ago.

And of course, show up on time and be nice to EVERYBODY - I got in a long chat with the lady at the front desk, and it turns out she helps with the staffing.

Thanks for the tips. I have an interview tomorrow for an LPN position. I am planning on wearing just a light touch of make up so I don't look dead. I use mineral make up. Its very light and doesn't look cake face.

I do admit I have to wear ankle boots because I am very self conscious about my socks showing but they are a dress boot with a 2 inch heel.
