Short term disability?

Published

Hi everyone,

A couple of people have recommended applying for short term disability while out on my leave of absence. I'm just wondering about the company's willingness to cover an LOA for substance abuse. Do you wait until after your evaluation? My HR director did advise me to file a claim for short term disability. My case manager with IPN has advised my eval will be for chronic pain and depression. I guess I'm just worried they won't accept my claim. If anyone has any experience with this I'd appreciate any advice you can give me.

Thank you!!

I was able to receive short term disability while on leave and I diverted from my job and was caught. Since they didn't fire me, I was able to collect short term disability while on FMLA and going to PHP and IOP. (I wasn't able to collect until I actually started the programs). It was for opiate addiction and that is what I told the short term disability people. They knew all the details too as my psychiatrist had to fill out all this paperwork, so they knew I stole from work and all that. Once that was over and once I got my psychiatrist to clear me to return to work, the short term disability ended. I was not allowed back into my old position so I didn't have a job to return to and was in a weird limbo where I was still an employee but without a position. I was told to apply for jobs without medications. During the weird limbo period I was unable to collect any short term disability but I have heard of someone in a similar situation at a different hospital where they continued to collect at this point. Either way, yes as long as you're not fired this is considered a medical condition so don't feel bad about applying for it. I guess I can't speak for your STD company directly but in general I would think this should be approved as long as you're going to treatment.

I was able to receive short term disability for Major Depressive Disorder while I was not permitted to work. Lest you think I was trying to game the system, I was not. I was in fact severely depressed ( had been for years). In fact it was getting caught and being forced into treatment that finally made me address the underlying cause of my addiction. In California Short term disability is handled by the state so you employer doesn't have anything to do with it. My doctor signed the papers and I got my checks. Bear in mind that you will only get about 2/3 of you regular pay depending on how much you have earned in the past year. (Unless you have gap insurance) They pick the last quarter that you made the most money to base it on. I stayed on it until I was permitted to go back to work. I think I got about $1400.00 a month. No enough to feed a cat on really but we had my husbands income as well.

My experience waa similar to Lisacar's although I was able to collect until I found a new job within my hospital. I was caught drinking/drunk on the job and had short term disability approved for alcoholism.
