shift/weekend differentials and weekend options

How does your hospital compensate for different shifts and weekends? Does your hospital use percentages or a dollar amount? What are these amounts? Does you hospital have a weekend option plan? If so what are the details of the plan at your hospital? I am working on a project for my leadership class in the BSN program and I need to compile as much information as I can get. It would also be helpful if you could indicate what state you are in. Thank You!

My hospital offers RNs an additional $2.50 per hour over base pay for the evening hours from 7pm-11pm; RNs working 11pm-7am earn an additional $5 per hour over base. So a 12-hour nightshift for an RN is nice :)

LPNs earn shift differentials, too, but it's less...I *think* it's 1.50 more an hour for eves and either $3 or 3.50 for nights. I can't recall.

There's no differentials or bonuses for weekend work, however. Everyone, whether RN, LPN, or care tech must work alternating weekends as a requirement of the job. Calling out on "your" weekends buys you another weekend on ;) It's not really a problem. I'm in NYS.

3-11 gets you $4/hr extra. 11p-7a gets you $6/hr more.

Weekend option pay is:

7a-7p 1.5x base salary/hr

7p-7a 1.67x base salary/hr

evening/night diff is added to that also.

I work weekend option and enjoy it because of the way it benefits my family. I do Fri. & Sat. nights. We get benefits as if we were fulltime employees. The only drawback is if you call in sick, you get 20hrs of vacation taken out of your pay instead of the 12 you would be working. And we only get 6 weekend (12hr) shifts off a year. So that kind of stinks.

But I like it overall. Most of the other nurses working weekends are weekend-option people as well so we get used to working together & make a pretty nice team *most of the time.* I am in NC.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Day shift weekends Sat/Sun

Night shift weekends Fri/Sat/Sun

We get a 10% shift diff for working 7-10:30pm and then 20% for working 10:30-7:30a.

There is no shift diff for the weekends unless you work strictly weekends only and then it's 20%. If you are a day shift weekender - your 3rd day is either Friday or Monday depending on the staffing needs.

Uk system

+30% after 8pm or on a designated 'night ' shift in the week

+30% all day saturday

+60% all day Sunday and bank holidays
