Sentara's new BSN program

I am going to the open house tomorrow. I am also between Sentara and TCC. If I go to TCC, I'm going to get my BSN from ODU right after getting my ADN. I'm not taking loans out and we're paying out of pocket so TCC would be the right choice but I'm not basing my entire decision on that. I also need to continue working partime while in nursing school. I think I'll have a better picture after tomorrow's open house. I know previous posters have said that Sentara is working with ODU for their BSN, but I want to be sure that I don't have to repeat a lot of courses when I go for my Master's one of these days! :) I won't be able to get in anywhere until Fall 2011, so in the mean time, I'm taking pre-req's and dreaming of getting OUT of sales!

I know someone who graduated from Sentara a year ago and I have not met anyone from the TCC program. I have only heard that the TCC program takes a long time to get in. My husband thinks I should just go for the TCC program and contineue taking all the classes for Sentara just in case. If I get in the TCC program, a few extra classes won't hurt. I will make my decision after I have been to the Sentara program.

I went today and it was really informative. I'm going to continue the route of both programs, but I won't be able to start Sentara until their Fall '12 class if I go that route. They are very strict of having all pre-req's done more quickly than the older program. They have the new pre-req's and requirements posted on their website. Bacially you have to be completely done with everything by Feb. 1 of the year you want to start the program (which now only begins in August for traditional BSN students and LPN to BSN students) and you also have to pass the CNA training & state test. So, I'm going to apply to TCC at the end of Summer '10 for Fall '11 and see what happens there but also keep going in all the classes to go to Sentara or ODU. This is what I want to do and what's one more year in the scheme of things?

I also want to hear what you think after attending! :)

I saw all the info on their website last night and printed it off to review. You have to apply to the school, get accepted, take some online nursing classes and then apply the the nursing program? They is the way it seems to read! I was thinking the same thing about applying to both. I was told today that TCC expects a very large volume of applicants now because of Sentara changes. Students are going the TCC route it seems first. Maybe they are doing the same we are thinking of (applying to both). Did sentara seem to think they will have a long waiting list?

One thing I am trying to figure out is what I read on the printout about apply to the school and then the nursing program. When deadlines are for the two and requirements. It seems to read that you can apply to the school after 30 credit hours including 12 in the sciences. You have continue with pre requis, take online nursing classes if accepted, and other requirements all to be done by Feb 1. then you may be accepted into the nursing program. Of course, it will def be easier to have all those pre-requis done before hand. Did you understand it from them to be like that when you went today? I will get a better understanding after Saturday if guess.

Yeah, that's how it goes. You have to apply to the school (with at least 30 of the 46 hours which includes 3 of the 4 sciences) by 9/1 of the year before you attend. You will get accepted by 11/1. From there, you have to have everything completed by 2/1 (all hours except they'll be lenient with the fine arts & something else classes) and have finished or have proof that you are taking the CNA class & state test. Then you take some online nursing classes, write an admissions essay and may be admitted to the fall course. It's a lot of work but the program does look awesome. Classes/Clinicals are Monday - Thursday with Fridays off.

Sentara only mentioned TCC when they talked about going to their RN to BSN program (which looks good too as it's part time to less than part time). THey didn't talk about a waiting list either. I'm assuming with the amount of classes and prep work that you have to take beforehand, it's going to weed out a lot of students who will look at other programs so I imagine if you do well in the pre-req's & such, you'll get in. A girl that walked out near me was already talking about meeting with MCI instead of Sentara.

I've thought the same thing that TCC will be inendated with students but they are building the new health sciences building on the Virginia Beach campus which is set to open in Spring 2011 (though nothing ever opens on time!) and that could possibly take more students (that's just my guess!). Who knows? I am going to bust my butt getting good grades in Anatomy I & II for TCC's grading scale. I'm like you too in the resepct that I'm just plugging along to apply to TCC and continue with the Sentara courses (which are also ODU courses!).

What classes are you taking this fall? I am taking A & P I and also math4 to review before clg alg.

I'm taking Bio 100 (have you had that) and Alg 1 (because I suck in math!!!). Next semester is Chemistry and AP 1. I'm taking AP II over the summer '10 (I know that's hard but it to apply to TCC for early admission). What are you doing?

I too have attended the Sentara open session last week and I started out feeling very defeated. However Lisa was very encouraging and did advise me on how to schedule my class for the fall that would make me a candiate for Aug 2010 start. I figured what the heck I will shoot for the stars and if I do not get accepted I would at least have all my pre reqs for all the other rn programs and will start applying in nov. Has anyone considered going over to thomas nelson community college or Riverside? I know that riverside is only a diplomia program however they do not have a waiting list!! I am making them my second choice since I know that Tcc will be over run with applications.

I took Bio 100 and Math 3 in the spring, no classes over the summer. Bio 100 was lot of memorization but I loved it. I know I have the math for TCC but not for Sentara. My daughter is taking Math4 at TCC in the fall so we are doing it together online. in spring 10, I will do Clg Math, A & P II and the SDV 100 for TCC just in case I apply there. At TCC open house the woman said she recommends taking Bio 150 the Microbiology over the summer so I have been thinking about that. I have a two year plan that I have made myself, I may see if someone at Sentara has time to look it over. Since I have to wait to apply to Sentara in 2011, I have time to meet with them another time.

I will let you know after I go in this morning, what I think. I have read and read the info they posted this week so I think I have a good understanding of the process.

are you saying Riverside does or does not have a waiting list?

Another question, for anyone, do you know if you have to have Bio 101 before Bio 150 at TCC, I was told since I took Bio 100 I was okay, but then it says Bio 01 or Bio101 is prereq. for Bio 150.
