How many of you have students who self carry their epi pens/auviQ and how is it working? I have a few older students who I would like to move in the direction of self carry because this is their last year in the small school and next year they will be in a much larger school with the Nurse's office much further away. And they will be changing classrooms, allowed to go off campus for lunch, etc. Any experiences to share with approaching parents on this and getting the students prepared to do this?

in my state, students are allowed to self carry and self admin inhalers, epi and insulin as long as it's signed by a doc and a parent. The age that I typically agree to this is middle school, though occasionally i see the doc sign it off in my k-8 school sooner. Honestly, I push to have it signed off in my school for self admin in middle school and question the parents that don't get the epi or inhaler the self admin order once the student hits 6th grade. (the diabetic students, i just expect will be mostly autonomous with me over seeing their actions and taking their numbers by middle school - but this is really all dependent on a lot of factors such as when they are diagnosed, did they just start a pump, etc. They're their own topic!)

For my self-carry epi-pen students I make sure I have a signed order from the Doctor saying it's okay to carry the med and I have the parent's permission. Next year I'm going to have the student, parent, and doctor sign an additional form stating that the student and parents assumes responsibility for bringing it to school and that I have the right to revoke the right to carry if I deem appropriate along with other statements. All 3 will need to initial next to each statement. I will then meet with the student to make sure they understand they need to carry the epi-pen at all times and they understand how to use it before I sign them off. I also want to see if my District will purchase these Epi Everywhere tags they can put on their purse or backpack.

Thanks. My state allows students to self carry medication with a physician sign off, parent sign off and my sign off I just need to work on getting the parents and students ready. Since I am in a small building I think it's the best time for me to take the time and educate the students and make sure they're ready. How do most of your self carry students carry their epi pens? I want to make sure it's not left in a backpack, in a locker, etc. and for epi do you keep one of the pens in the Nurse's office as well or do they carry the only does at school?
