I'm not quitting my job, but i am only part time. I don't really mind being part time, because there are hours i can pick up. but latley there just hasnt been much with the new people we hired. Not blamming them, they just finally realized we were short staffed, now we are not.
Anyway, i'm looking at getting a second job that would be flexible around my current job. 12 hour day/night rotation .6FTE. I go for several days off, where i feel like i could be working or doing something else. Does anyone else have any suggestions? Idealy i'd like to be using my nursing degree, since i feel like i'd get paid more. Anyone else in this situation and have suggestions of something i could do that would work around my current schedule?

How about home health? When I was in nursing school, I worked as a nursing assistant but they had RNs too. I just told them what days and times I was available. Some short visits or you might be able to do 8hr shifts too.
i've considered it...if i found the correct place. The area i live in is very odd. its a large city in the middle of nowhere. So its not unheard of for a home health nurse needing to make a 2 hour drive to see a patient.
I would do home health if it were in my city and my city only. I don't want to have to rack up the miles on my car.
Would something like home health be ok with me setting those restrictions? (our home health nurses use their own cars...eeek)

At your current job-would they have bumped you up to .9 or 1.0 prior to hiring these new people? That would have been the ideal-probably better benefits too! Talk with your manager about your desire for more hours or changed from part-time to full-time status.-if that is what you would desire.

That's what I was thinking. Did your manager know you wanted more hours prior to the hiring?
If part time people get partial or full benefits, it would be more cost-effective to bump a part-timer up than to hire more people.
who knows?? i think it has to deal with benefits. you hire more part-time people, the less benefits you offer.
she knows im interested and said a .75 "may open up" but she has been saying that for quite a while now.
Its frustrating because my fiance and i are banking on my income. we are by no means hurting, but it would sure help us out!!

If you live near a junior college talk to them about teaching part time. I taught a class at our local junior college and LOVED it! It was only about five hours a week and the pay was about $47 an hour. I also was paid an extra two hours a week for prep, prep time was automatic and I didn't have to turn in any timesheets for it.
