Schoolcraft College

Hello!

I keep hearing that Schoolcraft College is an excellent college for nursing. I go to Baker but my cousin is thinking of Schoolcraft because it is so close to her. Can anyone give their experience with the teachers and clinical instructors?

Thanks for the input.:redpinkhe

Hi, Hpygrl,

I go to Schoolcraft and am currently in my second year. I have had my ups and downs with the program, but overall have been very happy.

Mostly the instructors are excellent. They all have their personalities and quirks, but if you are a decent student and show up to learn, they will teach. There are only 6 full time instructors currently, and most of them I felt were good lecturers and gave fair tests. There is one instructor that is very tough and a lot of people do fail her class, but I thought she was wonderful. One instructor was a horrible lecturer and her tests had nothing to do with the lectures, but she would tell you what to study and turned out to be fair.

As for clinical instructors, they run from excellent to awful. I had one last year that was awful, but the dean listened to our concerns and terminated her half way through clinical (she was brand new). My instructor this rotation is excellent.

They are changing the program significantly, so I can't speak for the future. Overall I am pleased with my experience so far. I do have some complaints about administrative issues, but that's another story.

If you have any questions, I'd be happy to try to help. I don't think very many people on this board go to Schoolcraft.

I noticed online that many of the courses they are requiring during the nursing program are one's I have already taken. I was trying to figure out how this all works. Also, I passed my other two classes and clinical, but failed Med Surg 1 due to some family issues. Too much to relate right now. I have to reapply in the fall. If you fail one class at your school, do you have to reapply for the fall and wait 6 months?

I think so. Schoolcraft only admits in the fall, so if you fail first year, you have to wait until the next year to get back in. It's different if you fail second year. Sometimes they make you take all of second year over again, sometimes you can just get into that one class you failed.

I do know that 80% is passing, and you can only fail once. It is kind of harsh, I think. I know someone who got seriously ill the first year and had to wait until the next year to continue - and they counted that as one failure, even though she was an excellent student.
