school on suspension?

Published

I am a senior nursing student and am so glad that I followed my dream to go to nursing school. I am concerned because I just heard that my school is on suspension! Suspension from what? How do I find out if my school's Nursing program is on suspension? I know that my school used to have a wonderful reputation for turning out excellent Nurses, but this past year was a disappointment to me and I would not be surprised to find it to be true. I know how hard I work to be the best that I can be and I know I will be an excellent Nurse but I am worried about my school's reputation and how it will effect me. Where do I look to find out how my program ranks? Thank you so much!

I'm not really sure, I'm sure someone will come along and help you more, but did you try going to the board of nursing website for your state?

They likely didn't meet whatever criteria your states BON has for nursing schools. Check your state's BON website.

As long as they allow you to apply for a nursing license at the end of your program, that is all that matters, otherwise, transfer to a better school now. But be aware that your nursing courses most likely will not transfer to another school.

There are three possible forms of suspension.

1. Suspension from the State Board of Nursing. This might mean that the school will have to close and graduates will be prohibited from taking their Boards or getting a nursing license.

2. Nursing Accreditation suspension or warning: This might affect your ability to work at some hospitals, or do go on for further education (RN-BSN, MSN, etc). This is an external evaluation of the quality of your school, its curriculum, and faculty.

3. College/university accreditation suspension. This would prevent you from getting any federal financial aid (including Pell grants, Stafford loans, etc). This

may also affect your ability to transfer credit to another college or university.

Any way you look at it - suspension is not good. Try and find out whether the program is on probation or has been suspended, and what sort of level of suspension/probation it is.
