School Nursing

I have been a Traveler for years and finally settling down in ONE spot. That being said I am interested in doing something different besides working in a hospital all the time.

There are many agencies offering these School Nurse positions through the NYC Board of Education. I have a chance to interview with an Agency to obtain a position. But, I told her I would think about it because, it is new to me and I would like to research it. That being said I don't know anyone personally who works as a School Nurse so I am hoping someone can give me some insight. Even if you are a Permanent School Nurse you might work with Agency Staff at your school.

I have read threads in the School Nurse forum and it gave me some information as to what Permanent Staff but, what about a School Nurse that works for an agency do?

Hi- I just finished a 5 month assignment as a school nurse through my agency. I was assigned to 1 or 2 students in an elementary special day class with severely disabled students. I was one of 3 nurses in the classroom. The students had a wide range is diagnoses and medically needs but it mostly consisted of diabetes management, seizure precautions, medication administration, g tube feeds, O2 administration, repositioning(wheelchair) and diapering. The days were short, 8:30- 3p but busy. Lots of documentation, it was really fun to interact with the students but one of us was constantly sent home when students did not come to school due to illness. And that happened often. And no pay during school vacations or teacher work days.

Hope this helps and all the best!
