Nursing Students Student Assist

Published

Hello,

I am new to allnurses.com so excuse me if I am repeating a recent thread.

I am in search of additional funding for my nursing education. I received the maxium amount of federal grants and loans but unfortunately I still have a balance. Is anyone aware of nursing scholarships/grants for the 2011-2012 school year? Were you ever a recipient of the scholarship a previous school year? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks a million!! :nurse:

Welcome to Allnurses Faithful08!!

I'd check with your school's financial aid office. For this spring semester I was given a Phi Theta Kappa scholarship because I'm a member of PTK, and was given a transfer scholarship by the University because of my GPA. Both of those scholarships renew each semester as long as I keep my GPA above a 3.5. Those two are also general scholarships, not nursing specific. However, the master application for the rest of the scholarships just opened up and I applied for another 14 - all available through my school. Most of the 14 were specifically for nursing.

You are very lucky to get the grants, I cant get anything, ECF is 7k... But I am throwing myself out there for scholarships. There are plenty of different ones, some just require a transcript (but that was GPA based and the highest 50 GPA's get the scholarship, last year reported the cutoff was 3.93), other require a college presidents nomination, but alot are just on the web and a quick google search will pull them up.

A word of caution, you might be paying too much for school if Federal Student loans + pell grant dont cover your tuition.

Thanks for your suggestions!!

Google is my current search engine so any other suggestions are helpful :)

@ Student 4 life.. This is my second bachelors degree therefore I received a limited amount of federal funding and was not eligible for certain grants. Surprisingly this program is a lot cheaper than my undergraduate university.

Second degree here too. I will be applying to local hospitals even though those say for high school seniors. Its worth the chance they'd pick me! If I may ask, what grant(s) did you get? I filled out my fafsa & made an account with (ucf) my schools financial aid but I have no help so far (that I know of!). I am kind of lost and am focusing this weekend on scholarships, etc since I got my acceptance letter recently.

I am not eligible for grants since I am a second bachelor degree candidate. I received the pell grant for my first degree. Good luck on your search. I spent over an hour searching yesterday and found no more than two

I agree that your school's financial aid office should be a good source of info. Also (if your fin aid office hasn't already directed you to this), many states have (or, at least, used to have -- I don't know how many are still doing this in the current economy) state-funded programs to encourage state residents to go into nursing, and, often, you can "work off" the money after graduation rather than paying it back. When I was looking for $$ for grad school years ago, I found that my state offered three different (state-funded and administered) scholarship/grant programs for state residents who wanted to go into nursing, or further their nursing education. I got a nice chunk of change for school from one of the programs, and was able to work it off after graduation simply by working IN the state, anywhere I chose (with a few minor restrictions), didn't even have to be working for the state. Didn't have to pay a penny back.

Another thing I found, when looking for grad school money, was that there were lots of small scholarships available from local/regional charitable foundations, churches, etc. These only involved small amounts of money (a few hundred $ or maybe $1k tops) each, but it adds up! I was able to locate quite a few possibilities (although I ended up not applying for any of them, since I got the state money), and this was pre-Internet so I'm sure it would be even easier to track down things like that nowadays.

I know from experience that looking for money for school can be an education (and full-time job) in itself! :D Best wishes!
