Scheduling difficulty

Published

I am so stressed out!!! I was hired for 36 hrs in the ED at my hospital. I am not a new nurse but am new to emergency. My manager said I would do 6 weeks orientation on days 5 days a week and then get to my new schedule. Now after 6 weeks my nurse educator is giving me a hard time and says that I have to work 12 hr days for at least a month. This is not based on performance mind you.

I have child care issues and need my evening or night shift. My nurse manager and my nurse educator had a meeting and now my manager is willing to "compromise" 9-5 Mon-Fri. I am burned out from working the days as it is. I wasn't hired for these shifts and I can't and don't want to work them. Any suggestions???

Which shifts were you hired for and, more importantly ,did you get it in writing?

I was hired for 3pm -3am. I am even available any shift on the weekend even days. They won't compromise. Could it be that I just told them I am pregnant-just found out month ago?

No I didn't get it in writing.

If you are in a position to be able to actually do it, I would tell manager/HD, whoever, that you were hired for the 3p-3a shift and if that is no longer available you will have to start looking for employment somewhere else to meet your needs. That you are NOT available long term for the day shift, etc.

It does make it kind of sticky that you are pregnant and may need your health plan there. If you don't, I would definitely speak with whoever and then actually find something else. If you can't do day shift forever, then you can't.

Maybe the threat would be enough to make them uphold there promises. If not, you probably don't want to be employed there long-term anyway. I hope it all works out for you.

Basically your stuck. Is there no way you can add 4 more weeks to the six you've done? If not then you can get ugly and demand the shift you were hired for, you can go over their head and demand it from your director or bosses boss. But you run the risk of them telling you "if you don't like it, then quit". Are you in a position to quit?

It sucks. Too bad they can't be reasonable.

Always remember you are a nurse and you are in high demand. If you are not happy you can always find your place to be happy. By no means are you limited in your profession. I would think about my family and my happiness. If your not happy your patients will be the ones to suffer. You are not STUCK........ As the previous reply said........

I hope that makes the OP feel better. It sure makes me feel better, and I'm even happy where I am right now! Thanks! :loveya:

My husband and I have been discussing this and you are right I am not STUCK. Thank you. It seems sometimes that I am in a dire situation but now I can think about all the other things I can do as a nurse.

I am going to HR Monday morn and seeing if they can put me somewhere else in the hospital.
