Scared of teach retaliation

Published

So,

A little background, this semester I am taking chem lecture and chem lab, both taught by different professors. Though I would not call a lab instructor a professor. In any event, from the first class I began feeling uneasy about my lab instructor. Later I would learn I was not the only one, but one of many. On the first day she said nobody should expect an A from her. From the very first day she would speak to students in a very condescending voice, constantly yell, and visibly show her frustration with us. From that point on at the beginning of each session she would give us a "lecture" about how it was our own responsibility to study and perform, and that she was not to explain herself more than once; all answers to our questions were hypothetically to be answered after the experiments. Fast forward to last Thursday.

We were about to start titration. As always she rushed through the procedure, barking. She said whoever got a perfect endpoint at which time the color of the liquid should be pink, would get 5 point extra. Of course, everyone was excited!

So, I quickly set up the experiment and performed the titration at endpoint of 43.1 mL, and having the pink liquid. From across the lab looking at me she yelled that color was incorrect. Everyone stopped and looked at me. I was on the spot. She dashed through to me, grabbed the flask of my hand, lifted it up shaking and saying it was too dark, I was one drop too many. At this point EVERYONE made a note of what the color should not be, a light pink, she said this time. I argued that I thought what I had looked light pink. It is all subjective, since she never showed the right color of the liquid, which I also pointed out. Long story short, everyone got the color right (since they had seen what the color should not be, and her mentioning it should be light pink, which she never did at the start of the session). As she was congratulating the students I came up to her and asked if I, too, would get the credit. She looked at me like I had two heads and said why would I get a credit if I messed up. I yet again explained that it was not fair, that she never showed the right color, and then she dangled my flask in front of everyone so everyone understood what the right color should not be - pink, but rather a light pink. Then she called me a cry baby and that I was too troublesome, compared to the students in a different section.

At the very end of the session as she was calling out names of students to come up and get their lab reports, she called my name but did not give my lab report back. She said if I wanted the credit I would have to do the titration again. Feeling humiliated for doing the experiment again just to prove the point, I decided to proceed. However, half way through she asked everyone to leave and said she would give extra 5 point if everyone cleared the lab.

Of course, I felt unjustly humiliated and assessed (clearly she has no clear assessment criteria if she throws extra credit everywhere) I reported this to the chair of the chem department. He said he would speak to her. My thing is now, I am afraid if she will retaliate and make the last few weeks in the lab miserable, and even worse, fail me.

Later I learned that before I complained seven other students had filed complaints against her! Clearly, it is not me, but her. Being a teacher of 7 years I understand what effective teaching is, and how a teacher should behave professionally.

Thanks everyone for listening!

Wow! What a nasty, nasty woman!

I was going to say "suck it up, buttercup", but she's way over the line, IMO. Keep track of EVERYTHING that happens from this point forward - record the labs if you can. I'm sorry :(
