Looking at the list of books ill need for the program. Would it be much difference buying an edition older than what EC bookstore has listed? Price difference is substantial

Usually you're good to go with an edition or two back -- after all, some concepts don't change. But definitely look beyond the EC bookstore, their prices are high! I figured you were just looking there to view the required books, but just in case ... Amazon.com or eBay usually have better prices.

I'd also check CHEGG, they have the same books, and you can rent them instead of buy.
