Saving lives

You know how nurses make a difference in their patients and their families lives? And that we save lives albeit we don't see it the immediate results?

Last night, working as an undergrad in the ER, a patient on my team coded in front of me. I started CPR, my preceptor bagged, the trauma nurse shocked the patient. The patient came back to life.

Thought I'd share that with you fellow students that we nurses save lives through all means!

Thanks for sharing! Its moments like these that make you want to keep going in nursing school! Some of the people on here who have doubted their decisions to become nurses should read this maybe it will remind them of why they chose this field! I bet you will always remember that night!

You will definitely remember your first code, but just keep in mind that while you are still in school, this is an excellent time to learn all you can. While in school we had several students who performed CPR on pts that coded. Some of them kept the situations hush-hush, while others spoke aloud of the glory they had done (kinda like a battle story). Some stories are good to tell, while others (like this) need to be quietly told for liability sake. Keep up the good work though, and keep your head held high for the rest of your schooling!

Congratulations!! I bet it felt really good to see your patient come back!! You should be very proud :wink2:

good for you!

i remember the feeling of my first code, too. it's a really amazing feeling to grasp the concept that you helped to save someone's life. not many people can say that.

i've been in an emergency setting for about 6 years and it's always an exhilarating feeling when you have a successful code. keep up the good work!
