Safe Harbor Protections

Published

I have a question. I'm a student nurse in the A.D.N. program and today our teacher told us about envoking safe harbor if you come to work and they give you 15 patients which is unsafe. My question is will that upset my boss? In the real world how does that work? Thanks Mia98

Texas is the only state that has the Safe Harbor laws, so many of the people on this forum may not even have a clue on what you are referring to, since they come from all over the U.S., Canada, and other nations around the world. You may wish to post this same question on the Texas Nurses Forum to garner more responses from people in that state. I included the link below.

I found this PDF document re: this. I confess I wish ALL states (not only Texas) had this in their BON policies.

I live in Texas. I know nurses who have invoked Safe Harbor and been fired for it. Invoking Safe Harbor is pretty much the same as quitting.

There is a big thread in the nursing news section right now, about three nurses who got fired in the Dallas for refusing an unsafe pt assignment. Go to the nursing News board and check it out.

I am sorry to inform you but In Texas there is Nothing Safe and there is No Harbor in Safe Harbor it is a joke and not worth the Paper it is written on. You envoke Safe Harbor God be with you and most of all God be with your patients. Safe Harbor only protects you not your patient and not your Job. Go to the Thread that was metioned above or go to nnoc.net and go to Texas to find out more and what is going on in Texas
