Safe Dose Range - Peds Help???!!

Ok, my instructor never emailed me back and we have final on Mon.

Say you are looking at SDR's and you have a range of 390-525mg.

After your calculation you come up with 280mg as your dose.

Would this still be considered safe even if its below the range?

It just is non-therapeutic but its still safe right?

Also, why would you not give Lasix to a nephrotic syndrome pt?:uhoh21:

I'm just a student myself, but I just finished my ped's rotation.

The dosage is safe, just not in the therapeutic range. Anything that is not over the max would be considered in the safe range.

As far as not giving Lasix with Nephrotic Syndrome, I wasn't aware that you couldn't. I'm reading in my textbook right now and it states "If complications of edema develop, diuretic therapy may be initiatied to provide relief." Maybe someone else knows the answer to this???

I would say it depends on the medication...you don't really have enough info to answer the question properly. What if it was a medication like insulin or digoxin where if the child was not in a therapeutic range, the consequences could be bad...know what I mean? If the child needed X amount of medication to remain functional, and you are not giving enough, it could impact that child in a bad way. I would say if they give you a "safe range" it would need to be within both the lower and upper end. But still not enough info...JMHO.

You would not give Lasix if the patient is asymptomatic or is not showing signs of edema. Lasix is a choice diuretic if the patient become edematous.
