Resume?

I hope I'm on the right forum...I'm hoping those of you who have recently been job hunting can give me some advice.

I'm heading into my last year of nursing school (BSN, seems like I've been going to school forever). I'm starting to think about job hunting. I don't necessarily want to stay in this area. So...that may require sending out resumes. I see resume services and wonder if its worth the money.

My resume is going to look a little odd, as I'm 47, and took more than 20 years out of the traditional workforce to raise children. While I was playing Mom I bought and sold houses (made a profit every time), sold on ebay, and homeschooled a special needs child. I know there are skills there, but it isn't going to be a traditional resume. Which leaves me wondering where to even start.

Did you use resume's? Did you do your own? Use a service? just curious how others have handled it, especially if anyone is a little, er, um, (extra:wink2:)mature as a new nurse.

Hm, thought I already posted this, but don't see it. Thank you Chelli73, those were great examples!

Does the school you attend have a Career Services Department? My school did, and they were the ones that helped me with my resume. I began it, and they helped me polish it up so it shined! Maybe try something like that, or even a trusted professor or advisor on campus! Good Luck with your resume!! :)

My resume is "colorful" also but I've been assured by many of my instructors that my real life experience is highly valuable. I've peppered it with CE classes/seminars and joined a national nursing organization to reinforce my committment to our profession. It is my understanding that many places rely heavily on their own job applications so while a resume is a nice touch it isn't the end all. The other thing is that, and maybe I'm just old fashioned, I do not believe in just faxing, emailing or mailing resumes out willy nilly. It seems to me like that is the fast track to the trash can. Getting face time, schmoozing the HR secretary, possibly landing an impromptu interview etc. is the way to go, imo. Much luck to you and remember as a mature employee you are very valuable and, hey, have you heard there is a huge nursing shortage? :nuke:

I agree totally with you on the value of plain old footwork.

Ordinarily, I wouldn't be too worried about a resume. I know that I can get a job here in town, no problem. However, I'm considering a move to a state over 800 miles away. I'd like to send a resume out to several hospitals there to kind of pave the way, then maybe fly up there during winter break.

I was just curious when I saw places advertising 'nursing resume's' in particular. Made me wonder if there was a need for a professionally generated resume.
