Resource Pools

I work as a Nurse Manager of the Adult MS and CC float pools in a midwest hospital. I'm looking for information on incentives for your float staff. Are they paid more to float, if so how many units and how much more per hour? Is it just a bonus? Do you have weekend only options? what kind? how do they work? Do you use a tiering model for the float pool if so, can you share it?

I know a lot of questions, but I am looking to revamp our current float pool and would love any/all information you can share with me. Thanks in advance.

Hey, I was a float pool RN for 2 1/2 years and loved it. At my facility float pool nurses were not required to work weekend shifts at all, as long as they worked 2 night shifts a schedule (or they could opt to do straight days and do 2 weekend shifts). I was straight nights so it worked great for me. My hospital is smaller no trauma and most of our admissions are on weekdays, so I realize this may not work for larger facilities.

My hospital did not have weekend only options. At my facility it would have been a terrible idea as more staff gets downsized on weekends than any other time, decreasing the need for float pool staff.

At the time I was in the float pool it was on PRN staff. So while I made more than floor nurses, I didn't get benefits. I believe my pay was the same as floor nurses that are PRN. The float pool I left is now full-time RN's with benefits and PRN RN's.
