Resigned from LTC today

Worked for this company over a year and relocated to a sister facility that was described as "so nice" and fortunately for me only 5 miles from my home.

My orientation was basically a two day, help my preceptor...tour. I did bolus feeds and trach care and basically oriented myself to where everything was. It was fun but I basically knew I would be soon on my own.

The facility had certified med techs but the hallway I was assigned did not. I had the medicare acute group. Alert and oriented, some acute who really need extra care and those drug seekers.

I found myself drowning. I was solely responsible for 24. Admissions and discharges daily with the help of one CNA, who was trying their best also. My unit manager was finding things daily that should have been caught but I kept reminding him I work 12 hour shifts and I wasn't the only nurse working that hall.

I wish administration would take a closer look at patient care. I couldn't watch it anymore. I was amazed my DON just said OK and signed my resignation.

Unbelievable!

I have been in your shoes before and it is so frustrating!!! All we want to do is take care of our residents/patients and we seem to get more and more added to a collapsing wagon!! I have been a charge nurse in LTC and acute care at the hospital and was a Director of Nursing at a horrible facility. I resigned when I felt unsafe and basically just to the point of not being able to show up for work another day. Sad, because nursing shouldn't be this way.

i don't know how ltc facilities just don't see how poor the care sometimes.. is it all about the money? or what?

"They" know what's going on. If they do nothing, it's really because they just don't care.
